Cracker-gate or wafer-gate?!

This all started before I went on vacation...

It seems to have boiled over the last few days...

With all the true injustice in this world... with all the real preventable human suffering... THIS is what Catholics deem important?

Preserving, protecting and defending a freaking wafer!

An inanimate object they CLAIM* becomes the body of Christ at consecration.

On a separate note, How is EATING it any better than any other fate?

This truly is a world gone mad...

Muslims pissed at dogs, catholics protectng crackers...

I think I'm going to stay in cottage here on the Maine coast.

Well I can see their point. But I'm no fan of outright ridicule. Just as I wouldn't go out and 'torture' a tree in order to make a point with a Druid (I actually know a few - real nice folks).

That being said, I remember my first communion training when Sister told us how sacred the host was - warning us to not to chew. She related the story (I'm sure it's a Catholic urban legend) of the young communicant that was ill and vomited on the way back from the altar. The poor priest hod to come down and pick out the host, which he consumed.

With that kind of indoctrination, what else can you expect?

I have actually reconsidered my position on this and I am rather convinced that antagonizing die-hard Catholics, while fun, wins no friends.

Sadly it does... try bashing evangelical fundamentalist, you'll win even more friends that way...

Can't figure out if you are being sarcastic or not there Buddy!

Anonymous said...

Both I guess...

Used to be 'vogue' to bash Catholics (at least in Christian circles). Now it seems the cross hairs are on Evangelicals and Fundamentalists. Join in the fun and you'll have lots of people wanting to join in.

Me... I figure to each their own.

I was really trying to prod Chris.. He hates when I criticize him for 'fundy bashing'

This article you cite is pretty goofy. But hey, who are they hurting...? Let them have their sacred host. I was raised Catholic. I did my fair share of bashing... I thought I 'had a right'... but you know... seems kind of 'un-christian' now...

I too, being of French-Canadian and Italian was raised Catholic. So i am quite familiar with the rituals of Catholicism.

I consider most of them imaginative and benign if as you say a tad goofy.

To suggest that not consuming a consecrated communion host is akin to kidnapping or a hate crime...well that's just ridiculous to the point of absurdity.

Where was Mr Donohue's righteous indignation when the church was moving pedophiles from diocese to diocese to hide them from prosecution?

PATHETIC!

Did you mention hate crime... grrrr... ok that's a way to get me going....

So if I slit the throat of someone I love, it's not as bad as if I hate them when I do it...?

or better yet... is it worse to call someone I hate a foul name in public and spit on them or beat my wife or child whom I love?

Ah, Buddy. Disagreeing with disagreeable people (fundies? your word again, bro - not mine) is not the same thing as profaning the sacred traditions of the Catholics. Although I can understand how you and...ah, they....might get it confused. ;)

One difference between Roman Catholics and fundamentalists is that while Catholics believe the transubstantiated host is for their consumption alone, the fundamentalist would rather ram Jesus down everyone's throat.

People's belief systems are just as sacred as others traditions.

You just slipped my friend... you spelled it 'fundie' when I referenced the word it was in quotes and spelled fundy... sorry dude, you own it.. ;)

BTW: commenting on Robert's blog is like trying to stop for directions at NSA... who is he afraid of...?

King Ott said...

So I misspelled it? Only suggests that it is a term unfamiliar to me.

Anyway, I don't bust on their beliefs dude, I bust on their manners.

If Robert articulates his atheist philosophy, he is not attacking my beliefs. If he calls me an idiot for not agreeing with him, or depraved, or immoral, or in some other way deficient then I might find this to be in poor manners. When it comes to beliefs Robert and I disagree quite a bit. So where's the beef?

So if I say that I don't believe in hell or Satan or transubstantiation I am not attacking anyone's belief system, only stating my own. Now if their belief system is so fragile that it cannot handle people questioning it without reacting in an ill mannered way, well...what can I do? Just shut up? Me? C'mon.

Besides, thoughtful dissent is not the same as holding what is held to be a consecrated host hostage.

For the sake of impartiality it is time for you to start defending another put-upon group. How about the Mormons?

I think Robert might be some sort of Secret Agent. But he might consider lifting the Cone of Silence just a few more inches.

Wow!!!

I have to pay more attention to my comments...

This little exchange has escaped me!

Buddy said:

My response:

They may be sacred to the holders...but I assure you, they are not sacred to me. Nor am I required to believe them so! ;-) I will tolerate peoples beliefs to the extent that they do NOT infringe upon my rights.

Buddy said further:

My response:

Ummmmm....what?

Chris said:

My response:

Tell it brother!!!

Chris says further:

When Christians complain about their feelings being hurt over some one criticizing or questioning their beliefs it sounds like Muslims getting in a tizzy over blasphmeous drawings of Mohamed.

Get over yourself! isn't your God strong enough to smite me if he doesn't like what I am saying.... Come on!

Carlin would have been a smoldering pile of dust years ago!

I do think that it's a huge fuss about nothing but then I don't believe transubstantiation or any thing "holy" like that.

Robert said...

That's the point Hov! ;)

How in the world could someone's beliefs infringe on your rights?? It's only when their beliefs become manifest in actions could there be a problem.

RE: commenting on Robert's blog is like trying to stop for directions at NSA

There's quite a few hoops to jump through just to post a stinking comment... a bit paranoid dude?

Robert said...

@Buddy

Sometimes belief can inform or motivate peoples actions.

i.e. Islamic Honor killings, banning of medical research based on religious beliefs.

I'll grant you most people don't engage in this sort of behavior....but those that do have a HUGE effect.
