This post made me think of one of the funniest movies I have seen. "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House", from 1948, starring Cary Grant as a NY advertising executive who decides to build his "dream house" in rural Connecticut.
At one point he hires a local Yankee to drill for well water. The guy keeps drilling and drilling. Gets down over 100 feet, no water. Then another contractor starts to build the foundation, gets down about 10 feet and hits water that floods the foundation.
