For me it's a simple matter of survival. If we can't learn to settle our disputes without resorting to violence we will become extinct. We won't be able to do this without removing the barriers of race, religion and nationalism that support us.
I am not a pacifies. When we are attacked we need to defend ours selves. However, the more we are able to reach out with understanding, help our neighbors when we can, the less our neighbors are likely to attack us.
To settle disputes through peaceful negotiations, not war, requires trust. Without breaking the barriers that separate us we are unlikely to build that trust with our neighbors.
